Overcoming the One Day Mindset aka Procrastination
We all know at least one person that has these great goals, dreams, plans, aspirations, resolutions etc. You know the person, they have it all planned out, how it will work, how great it will be, how nothing will stop them.... yet they never start. When you inquire why they never start, they will start explaining that the timing isn't right, or they need (blank) and then they will do it. Granted sometimes these claims are valid there maybe some external situation holding you back from starting. However I bet ninety percent of the time it's bullshit, they know. You know it. We all know it. And at some point we have all been guilty of it.
For example I know that when I workout on a regular basis that I feel and look better, have more energy, tend to be in a better mood etc. There is no doubt that I like the benefits I receive from working out and exercising on a regular basis. There is also no doubt that my flesh doesn't like to work out. It cries, screams and kicks against it. It will come up with all sorts of valid excuses as to why I should take today off and start again tomorrow or when I feel like it. And there have been times that it has won that argument.
Today was one of those days that I knew I needed to get off my ass and workout yet I kept stalling, coming up w/ excuses or task that needed to be done. I finally got up, went outside grabbed my kettlebell and as I was trying to figure out my WOD I kept hearing this little nagging voice whining about this, that and a cats ass about why I should just go back in the shop and get work done. Have you ever experienced this type of situation?
So how do we get over this common obstacle and go from the One Day mentality to starting Day One?
There is a classic John Wayne movie Hondo where the Duke is talking w/ a boy that is fishing by a pond. The Duke gives the boy some fishing advice and shows the boy a better spot to fish from. The little boy explained that he'd like to fish there but can't because he doesn't know how to swim. The Duke looks at the little boy with a WTF look on his face and ask the kid how old he is. The boy replied six and before he can utter another word, in what seemed like one fluid movement, the Duke tossed the kids fishing pole aside, snatched the kid up and threw him in the pond. Guess what happened next? That's right the kid learned to swim. The Duke took him from a One Day mindset and launched him into Day One.
This is how I got started on my WOD today.
As all these excuses and delays etc were bombarding my mind and imploring me to just go back inside and enjoy the AC, I was setting my fitness timer and then hit go. As the countdown timer beeped w/ the last three seconds I found myself grabbing my kettlebell and positioning my feet to start swinging. Guess what happened next. That's right I started swimming. I had a great workout, I even did a little more than I had initially set out to do.
So why am I telling you this?
The next time you catch yourself procrastinating or not pursuing your goals because of a One Day mindset, don't wait for until you feel like it. Throw your excuses aside like they are that kids fishing pole and throw yourself in.
Hell the fact that your even alive proves you are a better swimmer than you give yourself credit for. Remember that 90% of life is showing up. Stop saying One Day and start Day One
